Why Recycle Mercury Thermostats?

The Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC), a not-for-profit corporation, recognizes mercury thermostats as an environmental concern. Mercury is a highly toxic element and when introduced as a contaminant into the environment it can quickly become a thereat to both people and wildlife. The TRC does their part by collection used wall-mounted mercury-switch thermostats through HVAC wholesalers such as Johnson Supply. Under this voluntary, industry-sponsored effort, heating and cooling contractors can drop off old mercury-switch thermostats (regardless of brand) at any Johnson Supply store. The thermostats are safely collected and delivered to the TRC's recycling center where the mercury is carefully extracted and forwarded to a mercury recycler to ensure that it is properly purified for re-use.

Refrigerant Recycling

Fluorcarbon refrigerants have been found to harm the ozone layer when released into the environment. Hydrofluororocarbons (HFC's) can be safely recovered, recycled and reclaimed from many applications including air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Johnson Supply is aware of the environmental effects of HFCs and in an effort to responsibly discard of fluorocarbon refrigerants, we are committed to participating in programs that support recovery, recycling, and reclamation of used refrigerants. Johnson Supply plays its part by serving as a collection agent for HVAC professionals who are willing to remove and recover used refrigerants from air conditioning or refrigeration equipment. We will then safely transport refrigerants to local and regional reclamation facilities where they can be properly reprocessed for further commercial use or destroyed.

Energy Efficiency

Improving the energy efficiency of the places where we work, play, and learn helps us save energy, save money, and fight global warming. Commercial and industrial facilities account for half of all energy consumption in the U.S. at a cost of over $200 billion per year. Johnson Supply is helping to decrease their share of this number by upgrading present lighting systems to more energy efficient systems. In just upgrading its corporate offices, Johnson Supply reduces annual costs of energy operation by close to $30,000.

Computer Paper Recycling

A standard size office typically generates about 1.5 pounds of waste paper per employee each day. Nearly half of typical office paper waste is high grade paper. Recycling one ton of paper can save about 6.7 cubic yards of landfill space. A cubic  yard of stacked office paper weighs about 380 pounds. Johnson Supply recycles its office paper which not only helps save space in our landfills, but also better utilizes our natural resources.

Electronic Document Storage

Johnson Supply actively converts  paper records to easily accessible electronic documents, completely eliminating all paper filing and retrieving, while allowing paper documents to be recycled. Our efforts to date have allowed us to eliminate 62 four-drawer filing cabinets. We have another 24 to go.

Printer Cartridges Recycling

Most printer ink cartridge are made of industrial grade plastic that don't easily decompose. Unfortunately, more often than not, these cartridges end up[ in our overloaded landfills. Johnson Supply makes a continued commitment to recycle printer cartridges. We look forward to the day when recycling cartridges is as common as separating waster material in our homes for the recycle bins.
